Let us talk about Vitiligo Symptoms in detail.
There are some Vitiligo symptoms which are easier to identify, while some are a bit difficult to recognize at first. This happens because these symptoms are not so obvious that a normal person can relate them to Vitiligo.
Broadly the symptoms can be divided into the following 2 categories:
- Obvious Vitiligo Symptoms
- Not So Obvious Vitiligo Symptoms
Let us see what these are.
Obvious Vitiligo Symptoms
These symptoms are easier to notice and identify.
Symptom 1: De-pigmentation of patches of skin. In simple words it means that some areas of your skin will turn white or pale yellow in color. This is also the most common symptom of Vitiligo and one which is very easy to identify.
Why this de-pigmentation of skin occurs? To understand that, you need to read about the various causes of Vitiligo.
Generally the areas of skin that get affected are the ones which are exposed to direct sunlight, like:
- Hands (fingers and wrists in particular)
- Face (lips is particular)
- Elbows and
Other than these areas, you may also notice white patches on:
- Navel and
Symptom 2: Premature whitening of eyebrows or eyelashes or both. Generally eyebrows and eyelashes do not gray at a younger age. And so this symptom is easier to identify.
Not So Obvious Vitiligo Symptoms
Now let us talk about the symptoms that are not so obvious to identify.
Symptom 1: Whitening of hair on the scalp. Though this symptom is easier to notice, it is not very easy to relate it to Vitiligo.
Many people suffer from premature whitening or graying of hair. And so at first it might seem normal. You will only notice it when the hair starts to gray at a faster rate.
Symptom 2: White patches on mucous membranes, like the tissues inside of your mouth. This symptom is difficult to notice unless you look out for it.
No one actually looks inside their mouth regularly and so it is very easy to miss this symptom.
Symptom 3: Loss of color of eye retina. This symptom too is difficult to identify because retina forms the inner layer of your eye and is not very noticeable.
Even if you figure out on your own that you might be suffering from Vitiligo, with the help of other symptoms, still you might not be able to notice the loss of color of your eye retina.
